It follows a long tradition of development, testing, and improvement in the testing of mental abilities. Below is a review of the historical context that produced the modern intelli gence assessment movement, the development and features of the WAIS-IV, and areas in which it is of most use clinically. Historical Approach The assessment of mental abilities began as a movement in the late 19 th century, spearheaded initially by English statistician Sir Francis Galton (1869, 1883).
